If you're from the UK and you believe in freedom of speech and an uncensored interenet, you really need to sign this petition. There are others floating about, but that particular one is the best way to ensure that your voice gets heard. It's hosted on the directgov website and addresses parliament directly. If it gets more than 100,000 signatures, it becomes eligible for discussion in the House of Commons.

Everyone's been getting so worked up over SOPA -- and rightly so -- that ACTA seems to have slipped under the radar. This is hugely problematic, because ACTA is a similar bill, but it has the potential to be far more damaging than SOPA ever could be.

Some people seem to have this misconception that ACTA is the 'European SOPA', but that simply isn't true. It's a global treaty, and it's already been signed by eight countries, including the US, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore. Europe votes on Thursday. If they vote 'no', the bill will have to be taken back to the drawing board and reformulated, which should buy us some time at the very least.

If you think this doesn't affect you, you're wrong. If ACTA passes, it could well signal the end of the internet as we know it, and that isn't an exaggeration. It's not just about watching movies and television online. If ACTA passes, sites like YouTube, Livejournal, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and even Google and Wikipedia could become impossible to maintain. ACTA would allow ISPs to monitor your net activity and cut off internet access for your entire household if one person is suspected of breaching copyright. Think Big Brother is Watching. I don't think I need to emphasise just how damaging it can be to be without internet access in this day and age, when we rely so heavily on technology.

It's not only bloggers and fandom that would be affected, either. Small businesses, independent film-makers and unsigned musicians who have previously found their niche online would also suffer hugely, and would be at risk of being bullied into submission by Hollywood and multinational corporations under accusations of copyright infringement. All those artists who found fame by uploading covers of songs to YouTube would never have had the opportunity to do so under ACTA, as those cover versions would be prohibited.

I know the internet has its problems, but to my mind it's the single greatest invention to come out of modern times, and it would be an absolute travesty if we were to lose that now. From a personal point of view, I can't even put into words how important this is to me. I've met some of my closest friends through the internet and online fandom, people whom I would likely never have met without it, and it's given me this amazing social support system. I don't want that to end here, and I want to preserve it for future generations so that they can have the same experience and opportunities I've been given through my online interactions.

I know that opinions on the seriousness of copyright infringement and online piracy vary wildly, but that isn't really the point. Internet giants such as Google are opposed to this bill, and it's pretty safe to say that they're not in favour of copyright infringment, as anyone who's ever had a fanvid taken down from YouTube will be painfully aware. Whatever your stance on copyright, this isn't the way to go about dealing with it. This is dangerous legislation that impeaches on some of our most basic human rights, such as the right to privacy and freedom of speech.

So if you're from the UK, please, please sign the petition. If you hail from elsewhere in the world, there may well be similar movements in your own country, but I think the most effective thing anybody can do right now is to keep talking about this. Talk about it on Livejournal, on Twitter, on Tumblr, on Facebook, and anywhere else you can think of. Make sure this issue is never far from people's minds. The internet is an amazingly powerful tool: let's utilise it while we still have the chance.

Please repost and spread the word :)

SAY NO TO ACTA!

Please consider reposting this, especially if you have a large proportion of UK flisties. And please consider spreading the word via other platforms: Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, your own personal network.

Okay, people. I need you to take this viral, and fast.

We know someone in upstate New York who needs a good custody lawyer ASAP. I'm not at liberty to go into details publicly, but this woman is very afraid that her abusive boyfriend is going to get sole custody of her young child.  She's presently being represented by a public defender who doesn't seem to care about the case, and she has very few resources left at this point. Her next hearing is on Thursday.

If you know a good lawyer in New York State who might be willing to take this case for a low fee or pro bono, or at least offer her advice or support, please let me know. If you don't know anyone, please repost this far and wide. As a mother and an abuse survivor, it makes me absolutely sick to my stomach to contemplate a child being left in the hands of an abuser.

I can be reached at [email protected] if you have any leads or want to help.

The internet can work miracles. Let's go.

It's Christmas morning and I was woken up by Topie in time to watch An Audience with Parkinson (started at 6:36 a.m.).

Our greatest Christmas present, done on Christmas Eve, was the gift of a flushing toilet. The toilet, which had been leaking from the cistern on and off, went out on Sunday -- the water was flowing through into the bowl so it couldn't be flushed. Since it had been previously repaired a couple of months back via a particular plumber via The Grey Army, we called on Monday morning asking for it to be fixed and what was the situation -- was the work covered?

We went back and forth for four days because the particular tradie wasn't answering his phone, which is unusual for the Grey Army tradies but not for this guy -- in fact we'd asked once for them to send out someone else and someone in the office called him one last time. We finally had a different plumber call on Thursday morning -- this guy phoned within five minutes of us calling the Grey Army and came out on Christmas Eve morning. (He fixed it within five minutes and said the seal from the cistern hadn't been repaired properly in the first place. Figures.) We found ourselves standing there just listening to the flush and revelling in it -- it amazes you just how much you rely on the amenities of modern life until you haven't got them any more.

His face lit up when we handed him a bottle of wine -- I think he thought we'd been joking when we said 'come out and there's a bottle of wine in it for you'. I noticed that particularly this year -- we normally give out bottles of wine, chocolates and little gifts to the various doctors/mechanics/hairdressers/etc. that we go to throughout the year, but everyone seemed utterly surprised and delighted that they'd had pressies this year.

It's been a funny thing this year with Christmas, it's like it snuck up on everyone -- I was at a Christmas party last week and everyone said how they were all 'shit, Christmas is next week' and it didn't feel like it in the least. I stayed away from the shopping centres this year, but when I drove past Southland Wednesday to drop off the pressie for the dentist, I actually noticed a parking space or two...

A merry Christmas to you all.

They shall not grow old
As we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We shall remember them.

Lest we forget.

Per [livejournal.com profile] cluegirl's post, referencing the ultimate end to yet another bullying incident ending in suicide here.

Like many of you, I was one of those bullied girls. Because I was 'weird'. Because I was fat. Because I was smart. Because I was crap at sports. Because I was an SF/fantasy fan. Because I just didn't fit in.

I had teachers ignore it. Or be the bullies themselves. Or tell me "well, it's because you're different."

I got through it. I had teachers in higher grades who were different and thrived on it. Or encouraged me to be as smart as I could possibly be.

Uni helped. I found people I could fit in with. I saw the people who were, if not with the popular crowd, at least accepted, floundering because they were in a big wide world where no-one cared that they were x's daughter or y's sister.

Fandom helped. Even pre-internet.

But somehow the bullies were still there. People who thought it was fun to hide my bag before class. People who thought it was fun to spread rumours about my sexuality, years before I realised I was bi. Bosses who thought I was good to bully because I was young and keen and needed the job. And it built up their own self esteem because they knew they were doing a shitty job, or in a corporation with a bullying culture.

So called 'friends' who pushed their issues on to me and then blamed me for them. Or cut me because their friends did. Or who allowed me to let my guard down and trust them, then turn around and lash out to cover their own issues.

Despite it all, I still believe, in the face of much evidence, that people are good and only want to do good. Because I've found people out there who do just that, and are just that. Both people online who I've never met and may never meet, and people I've met and continue to meet IRL.

And I'm working to fix myself, and will shortly be going to work in a profession where I will be helping others. And like as not, I'll have people walking through the door who went through what I went through, and like my therapist, will be watching a woman or man in their forties turn into a sobbing wreck of a 5, 10 or 15 year old again. And I'll be able to say, "I know. I've been where you've been, and it sucks. And we're going to work on healing this hurt and heal it together."

And to all those bullies out there: to the girl who pushed me away from the painting group because I was young and visiting and didn't know the rules, to the teachers who thought it was great to take out their self-esteem issues on a scared, vulnerable little girl who was raised to be polite and compliant, to the classmates who thought it was fun to torments someone who was 'different', to the 'friends' who for reasons of their own decided to turn on me and use intimate knowledge of me to cut me down, to the bosses and supervisors who decided to take advantage of someone who was vulnerable and needed a job/and or the money, right down to my ex-fiancee who decided, in a period of deep vulnerablility and pain, and KNOWING about my self esteem issues, still had no hesitation at pointing out some of my mannerisms and habits as 'faults' that I should correct (and yeah, how am I supposed to eat with my mouth closed when I'VE GOT A COLD THAT MAKES ME WANT TO CURL UP IN A CORNER AND TELL THE WORLD TO GO AWAY AND I CAN'T BREATHE THROUGH MY FREAKING NOSE?) ...

FUCK YOU ALL. JUST FUCK YOU RIGHT IN THE EAR. AND BY GOD I HOPE KARMA CATCHES UP WITH YOU BUT GOOD.

I'm offering up a fic of 1000 words minimum. You can find my offer here.

I'm willing to drag out some old fandoms if that's what people want, including LoTR and Pros (which I don't think I've written in fifteen years or more) but as I said, Lewis is where the bunnies are ATM.
timberwolfoz: (whee!)
First of all, thank you to [livejournal.com profile] derryderrydown and shewhoguards aka [livejournal.com profile] googlebrat for my stories, The Sound of Silence and The Helicopter. I had no idea who'd written them, so there you are. But again, thank you both for them!

I wrote Three Men, Three Supercars and a Sodding Great Stretch of Romanian Road, or, If They Could Extract And Market It, Top Gear Could Fund the BBC (with thanks to [livejournal.com profile] veronamay and [livejournal.com profile] suggsygirl for the beta, and for reassuring me by laughing during same) as my original assignment, and Is it 'Good Morrow' if it's scarcely after midnight? as an extra when I saw it listed on the Yuletide Madness list (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mcicioni for the beta on short notice). Thanks to everyone who left such lovely comments!

Oh, and as for 'Good Morrow' -- as I stated it's a fragment for a (then) unwritten first time L/H fic. Judging by the comments, some of you'll be pleased to know that the full story has now been written and is now at the beta's for the second pass. :) Also that the long fic I mentioned has been undergoing some extra polishing now that I 'know' what originally happened, and that one of my betas is working on the version I sent her before the holidays. :)

Also, I have a few ideas and partly-written fics for what happened between the first time fic and the sodding great fic (now up to 39896 words), and after said sodding great fic, so there'll be plenty more coming!
timberwolfoz: (whee!)
Firstly, let me say how delighted I am that you share an interest in at least one of my smaller fandoms; possibly even all three. You never know; I keep bumping into familiar names from five fandoms ago or thereabouts. :)

Secondly, these prompts are only a guide if you're scratching your head and saying 'who is she and what the hell do I write for her?' If you've got a plotbunny that's been nibbling at your ankles, expecially if it needs just that little extra bit of impetus to transfer from your brain to your word processing program of choice, go for your life, as we say here. At the risk of sounding pompous, I'd rather you write the fic that you want to write and that has you burning with inspiration and typing so fast the program can't keep up than thinking 'ah, shit, I'd better write this because she wants it' and punching out a dutiful formulaic fic that bores you.

That said, if you need or want inspiration, or at least prompts, please read on. )
